The Visual Studio component cache is out o date.

Problem Description.
 

You may receive the following error from SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) when you try to open a New Query window once you are connected with SSMS to SQL Server instance.

The Visual Studio component cache is out of date (assembly: Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.VSEditor, Version=15.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b033f5f7f11d50a3a). Please restart Visual Studio. (mscorlib)

When you try to make a right click on a user database, and make a click on New query the error received is shown below:

 

 

When you try to open a New Query window from the File menu, the appearance is a liitle bit different but essentially the same error message:



The version of SSMS we are using is 19.0.2.




 

Workaround/Solution.


Search on Windows for the Disk Cleanup application and open it.


 

Once the application is opened, run the cleanup process over the C: drive (system drive).

 

 

Make sure to have selected to clean up "Temporary files" and click OK.

 

 

As soon as the cleanup process finishes, you can proceed to open a New Query window again.
