Applies to: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition.

Problem Description.

One of my students was trying to apply SP1 for SQL Server 2008 on an instance installed on his laptop, but while running SQL Server setup he received the following error on the "Select Features" page.

"SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1
There are validation  errors on this page. Click OK to close this dialog box. Review errors at the bottom Setup page, then provide valid parameters or click Help for more information."

On the bottom of the "Select Features" page the following message was displayed:

"There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer".

Cause.

The cause of the error was that the student was applying an Spanish version of SP1 for SQL Server 2008 on an instance installed in English language. The "Select Features" page has a description message on the top right side of the page explaining what is occurring but the student did not read it:

"The language of SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER does not match the language expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product is English (United States) and the expected SQL Server language is Spanish (Spain)."
