ORA-12545 Connection failed because target host or object does not exist.

Applies to: SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Oracle.

Problem Description.

You are using SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) 2005 for Oracle and you are receiving the following error when trying to get connected to Oracle:

ORA-12545 Connection failed because target host or object does not exist.

Cause.

Please make sure you have configured the tnsnames.ora file.

If you have configured the tnsnames.ora file, and you have multiple Oracle tools installed on Windows, then you may have multiple Oracle homes and tnsnames.ora files on your computer. SSMA may not be using the one you need it to use.

Please determine if the Oracle service can be reached successfully using the tnsping utility.
