Cannot Launch Activity Monitor for a SQL Server 2000 Instance.

Applies to: Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Problem Description.

When you try to use the whole new Activity Monitor of SQL Server 2008 to obtain information about SQL Server processes of a SQL Server 2000 instance, you get the following informational message dialog on screen:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition version 8.00.2039.

Cause.

The new Activity Monitor of SQL Server 2008 does not support Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Activity Monitor has now new features that rely heavy on Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) and SQL Server 2000 does not have support to DMVs.

Workaround.

You still can use Enterprise Manager to obtain information about SQL Server processes on SQL Server 2000 instances.

References.

Activity Monitor connecting to a 64 bit SQL Server 2000 instance.
