Request couldn't be performed because of an IO device error.

Applies to: Microsoft SQL Server 2016, Azure SQL VM.

Problem Description.

An Azure user was trying to backup a database on an Azure VM to an Azure storage account when he received the following error:

"The Request could not be performed because of an IO device error".

The backup size was estimated at 13.5 TB.

Cause.

If you use stripped backups to URL, the backup size limit is 12.19 TB as explained on this blog post.

At this time this has not been listed as a limitation on the official SQL Server Backup to URL documentation.
