Cannot Connect to Database Master.

Problem Description.
 

We were installing SharePoint 2010 using the setup user account (we named the account sp_admin). We chose the “Server Farm” installation type with a complete installation. We chose also to run the Configuration Wizard, where we checked the “Run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard now” checkbox, and on the “Specify Configuration Database Settings” page of Configuration Wizard we received the following error when we provided the information requested on the page and made a click on the “Next” button:

Cannot connect to database master at SQL Server at
Gxxxxx.xxxx.com. The database might not exist, or the
current user does not have permission to connect to it.







Cause.


The setup user account needs to be assigned to the dbcreator and securityadmin server roles.



Solution.


Add the setup user account as a login to the SQL Server instance and assign it to the dbcreator and securityadmin server roles, as shown below:
